The King’s Speech today mentioned the government's intentions to make health reforms in this parliamentary session. We anticipate these reforms to include the proposed abolition of local Healthwatch (included in the NHS 10 year plan). A Bill is needed because the plan includes abolishing NHS England and Healthwatch which are enshrined in legislation. So what does this mean in practice?

The Bill will now be read and debated in the House of Commons and then later in the year, in the House of Lords. During this time, we will continue to raise awareness and share concerns about the impact of the proposals on the ability of ensuring local community voices are heard and valued.

Depending on what is debated and agreed, the Bill, and different parts of it, may be amended. Once the final Bill is agreed, it will then be presented for Royal Assent. Until such a time, please be assured that our Healthwatch Surrey service, part of our wider Luminus voice organisation will continue to operate as usual.

We are proud of our independent and impartial role, championing the voice of local people to shape, improve and get the best from NHS, health and social care services.

Whatever is decided regarding Healthwatch, we will work with our partners to establish what this could mean for patient/service user feedback; community engagement; understanding needs and barriers, and information/advice. Luminus will continue to shine a light on what matters to people through our Giving Carers a Voice and Surrey Substance Use Partnership Public Involvement services, and our many other projects ensuring people’s voices are heard to support their wellbeing.

We will continue to champion the importance of an independent, trusted conduit for people's experiences.
