Research Opportunity for Parents with Learning Disabilities

This project, led by Willow McGowan-Crewe, a trainee clinical psychologist at Royal Holloway University, is looking at how mental health difficulties are experienced from the perspectives of people with learning disabilities when they were pregnant or up to two years after they gave birth. It will be exploring how people made sense of their mental health difficulties, what has helped with management and recovery of the mental health difficulties, and different types support that has been available.

Willow McGowan-Crewe, is a trainee clinical psychologist at Royal Holloway University, completing her thesis project exploring how women and birthing people with learning disabilities experience their mental health during pregnancy or up to two years after they gave birth.

This project is looking at how mental health difficulties are experienced from the perspectives of people with learning disabilities when they were pregnant or up to two years after they gave birth. It will be exploring how people made sense of their mental health difficulties, what has helped with management and recovery of the mental health difficulties, and different types support that has been available.

There is very little research that has tried to understand the lived experiences of mental health difficulties of parents with learning disabilities in the perinatal period, so we hope this is an opportunity for parents to talk about their own experiences and contribute to more knowledge and understanding in this important area.

This research will involve completing interviews, either online or in-person. Willow will first meet with participants to see if they are suited to take part in the study and they can ask questions to see if it is something that they want to do. If people would like to take part and they are suited to the study, interviews will take place online or in person at a later date.

Participants will be given a £10 voucher for their time spent taking part in the interview.
