ADHD diagnosis: long waits on the NHS need urgent attention

6th June 2025

New Healthwatch England research has highlighted how a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can change people’s lives, giving them a better understanding of themselves and improving their wellbeing, self-esteem and concentration at work.

Following concerns about access to ADHD services raised by local Healthwatch and the public, Healthwatch England commissioned a poll of 2,579 adults to explore their experiences of possible ADHD and of getting a diagnosis. Of the 363 respondents who had already been diagnosed, most agreed a diagnosis improved many aspects of their lives, with the vast majority (84%) saying it helped them understand their behaviour and how their brain works. Over half (54%) agreed that being diagnosed for ADHD improved self-esteem, and 47% agreed it helped them concentrate at work or while studying. A number of Surrey residents responded to the national poll and ADHD –particularly issues around diagnosis – is something people talk to us about regularly. Find out more here in our report.
